Instructions | Image Naming Utility
As of September 2010, evaluation has been broken down into 2 evenings - Competition and Development evingings (click this link for details).
An additional prefix of either a "C" or a "D" is now required to determine which evening you would like your image to be displayed.
Please experiment with the Image Naming Utility to help avoid confusion with image titles and file names.
Please submit all digital entries and print or slide names as follows:
- The deadline is the evening of the Monday prior to evaluation. Images or print/slide names submitted after that deadline may not be included.
If you have a problem, please contact me, Jim Horn, at - Entries must be sent to
- Please follow these rules carefully because it will make it easier to prepare score sheets and it will also guarantee that your images display properly.
- Images must not exceed 1024 pixels wide and 768 pixels tall (high). The most common mistake is when members submit images with vertical orientation. For those images the key dimension is the height. For landscape images it is the width. To repeat - the image cannot exceed either of those dimensions. An image that doesn't display properly, because it is not within the size limits, will be judged based on how the projector displays it.
- Images should be named as follows: $category$image title$your name$
- Category is either Theme or Open. Please do not use Assigned in place of Theme. The entries are being sorted using this field and the category name must be consistent.
- Image title is the name by which you want this image to be known
- Your name - please use at least an initial and your last name.
- The dollar signs ($) are very important in creating the score sheets. Please use them as shown in the examples.
- Examples: $C$Theme$Water Lily$Sally Brown$.jpg or $Open$First Light$J Smith$.jpg
- To indicate your club level in either projected or prints (i.e. experience with photography):
$D$theme$My Dog$Jane Doe$1$ - Add a 1 or 2 at the end, followed by a $.To indicate if you don’t want the judge’s comment:
$D$Theme$My Dog$ Jane Doe$N$ - Simply add N at the end, followed by a $. - Images must be JPEGs. It is recommended that you save them using the highest quality permitted by your image editing software (E.G., Quality 12 in PhotoShop).
- Please use the sRGB colour space (gamut). If your camera captures images in sRGB, no changes are needed. However, if your camera is set for Adobe 98, please use your image editing software to convert the image to the sRGB colour space. The reason for this change is that our Optoma Projector displays in sRGB and we will be using the projector's default setting for sRGB. When it sees an image with an Adobe 98 colour space, it converts that image to sRGB. Adobe 98 is a larger colour space which offers a greater range of colours. Since most of the colours overlap in Adobe 98 and sRGB, there is no colour shift during display for most images. However a visible colour shift might occur if some of the colours in an Adobe 98 image were outside the range of colours in sRGB.
- Each member may submit up to three images, as long as at least one is
a print and at least one is theme.
To help make this really clear, here are some options that are open to
you.
You may submit:
One image: projected (digital or slide) or print, theme or open.
Two images: projected or print, one must be theme.
Three images: at least one must be a print, at least one must be theme.
Please note that, in keeping with past club policies, we are trying to encourage the entering of prints. The top 2 scores will be counted for the Aggregate Award.
We want to promote our club and its members. Consequently we want to show members' images on our web site. All images submitted for evaluation become eligible for inclusion on the Langley Camera Club website. Copyright remains with the image maker. If you do not wish your images to be put up on our site, please advise either Russ Desaulniers or myself. Images submitted in prints or slides can be included if a digital copy is available. We can arrange for a slide to be scanned and hope that prints began life as digital images. You may receive a request for a digital version of an image. Please be generous.
- Development Night (prefix images with a "D")
Second Meeting of the month (third Wednesday):
- The evening will continue to include a shorter member’s showcase
- Emphasis will be on discussion of images without scoring. Discussion will encourage participation by members, judges and maker. Example: image presented, members discuss in clusters, judges comment and maker comments.
- Competition Night (prefix images with a "C")
First Meeting of the month (second Wednesday):
- In any given month, members can send in three images, with a maximum of two on any night.
- If three images submitted, at least one must be a print.
- On Competition Night, at least one must be on theme. Only the highest score counts toward aggregate. Both images may count for levels advancement.
- There will be three judges plus one guest judge. Comments may be made by more than one judge, including the alternate, or a judge may pass. Each of the 3 Judges will score between 1-10 points per image, based on the criteria for evaluation at the level in which the image is entered.
