QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
Recently, I've had the following question regarding CAPA Competitions - and
I've provided an answer.
Feel free to email me with your questions at any time.
QUESTION #1: DUPLICATE COMPETITION ENTRIES
In the summer 2008 edition of Canadian Camera you mention 'Duplicating
Entries' on page 26. If I may quote the magazine here for your convenience:
"Images/photographs submitted to a CAPA competition for evaluation cannot be
simultaneously or subsequently entered into any other competition in any
year. CAPA expects photographers to submit different images into each
competition. The only exception is that a theme image may be entered into
an open competition and vice versa."
I was (and so were some of my colleagues) under the impression that you could send the same image that was sent into a digital/film competition, into a print competition. The reason being is that it was entered as a totally different medium than it was in its original state; that being the entire printing process.
ANSWER #1:
Thanks for your question regarding duplicate competition entries. For two and three round competitions (Pictorial/Theme/Nature/Print),
CAPA's rules (for at least the last three or four years) the rule was:
"Photographs previously entered in these club/individual competitions are
not eligible." My statement was meant to remind members of this rule and to
acknowledge that it has now been adopted across all of our competitions.
Images/photographs entered into any CAPA competition cannot be entered again
(with the exception of theme/open). It is based on the principle that once you submit an
image/photograph to a CAPA competition, the judging/scoring for that image
is complete: regardless of media presentation. A print made from a
negative, slide or digital image is still the same image; a digital image
created from a scanned negative or slide is the same image, regardless of
enhancements. This gives us the opportunity to decide whether to choose which
media presentation is best for each image, i.e. monochrome/colour print,
slide or digital, and encourages us to submit more of our images for
competition and feedback.
