Happy Thanksgiving to All of You!
Who can doubt that we live in one of the most beautiful places on earth? I spent a couple of days last week on the Duffey Lake Road, the highway between Pemberton and Lillooet. It was one of those rare occasions when I was able to get away, alone, and explore with my camera. Even though I had seen it many times before, I was continually astounded at the striking beauty of the area. Conversations with others along the way confirmed: it's all here!
Later, I asked a friend who has lived in Horseshoe Bay for almost 40 years, if he had ever been on the Duffey Lake Road. Although he has travelled many times to Africa, Europe, Russia, Mexico and more, he had never travelled two hours north to see the beauty in our own back yard.
One of benefits of our passion for photography is that our eyes open a little more and we see and look for the things often not recognized by others. I am thankful for the beauty around us and the chance to use my camera to celebrate the gift.

The Annual Awards Night
Thanks to all of you who attended our "classy affair" On September 29. It was a most successful evening, highlighted by the new Judy Daniels Award of Excellence and the presence of Kelly, Judy's daughter, (and of course Judy's dog, Rosie).
A huge thanks goes to two individuals who stepped in when they were needed and redefined the vision for the event, met several times with a committee and then put it all together. Tena Andersen and Joy Gerow worked for many hours on statistics, certificates, prizes and more to create an evening we can be proud of. From all of us, thank you for your hard work.

Freeman Patterson is Coming!
We are excited to host Canada's most famous photographer, recipient of the Order of Canada, author of many books and leader of countless workshops, next January. Freeman will present two workshops:
On Friday, January 21, he will lead a group of ten advanced photographers in a half-day session. Participants will be led on a photo shoot with Freeman in the morning. Later in the day, each participant will have three images displayed and discussed by Freeman. This session is open only to members of the Langley Camera Club and will cost $100. If more than ten members sign up, a lottery will be held to select ten.
On Saturday, January 22, an all-day workshop will be held at the Chief Sepass theatre in Fort Langley and is open to anyone interested. Tickets for this event are $75.00 but members of the club may obtain them for $50 if purchased prior to October 15. Freeman will use his own work to discuss many aspects of a successful photograph.
Thanks to Paul Baker who has made contact with Freeman and taken the lead on organizing this event. Please refer to his email of September 1 for details on tickets.
Next Club Outing: Reifel Bird Sanctuary
Please join us for the outing to Reifel Bird Sanctuary in Ladner on Sunday, October 31. We hope to see the snow geese that are due to arrive in mid October. We are also trying to arrange a special tour with OWL (Orphaned WildLife), a nearby bird rehabilitation facility. More details to come.
Meet on Sunday, October 31, 9:00 am outside POCO Military Supplies near Willowbrook Mall.

Aura McKay, Presenter for October
Photography comes from photo=light and graphy=writing. As photographers we are light writers. One of the unique characteristics of photography as an art form, is our ability to capture gestures and moments. When working with subjects that don't have 'expressions' how can image makers use this
to create images with more impact and creativity.
Join Aura McKay on October 27 as she shows examples of using the gesture implicit in light and shadows for travel and street photography and discusses the key properties of light. You can also preview her work by going to www.auramckay.com.

October Competition Night
Just a reminder that the deadline for this month's theme, bokeh, is Thanksgiving Monday, October 11. And, about our theme, bokeh is not a photographic technique, rather it is the subjective quality within the "out of focus" background in an image. The appearance of 'bokeh' differs from lens to lens due to contributing factors such as different manufacturers, focal length, aperture setting, etc. The 'spirit' of our theme is to have an image with a background that is out of focus in a manner that is effective for the subject.
Also, please remember to go to http://www.langleycameraclub.com/submissionInstructions.html to use the Image Naming Utility when submitting your images.
New Projector
We are now using a new projector for competition nights (thanks to Steve Poschner for making this happen). Effective for November submissions, please size your images 1400 pixels wide and maximum 1050 pixels high. Up until now, you have been using a maximum of 1024 x 768 px.
Need a Little Inspiration?
Here are some websites that have meant a lot to me in the last while.
- Craft and Vision. This is a website by local photographer and author David Duchemin. There are 20 ebooks available there for $5 each! It's hard to go wrong for $5 and even if you only get one idea, you've got your money's worth. Go to http://www.pixelatedimage.com/blog/2010/07/new-craft-vision-site/
- The Mindful Eye (http://www.tmelive.com/) offers detailed critiques of images. This is a website that is rich in learning opportunities and definitely worth some serious time.
- Check out this photographer's macro work at http://jalbum.net/browse/user/album/597959/. These are stunning images by an Australian photographer. And while you're there, explore Jalbum.net. It's worth a view.
