LCC This Month
(also available as a PDF after this link)

Hello Club,

Hope you like the new look of the newsletter and that you can quickly find what you need to know for the meetings each month.

This month the Olympics takes over our region and it is a once in a lifetime experience. There are hundreds of great photo ops even if you can’t get to an athletic event. The city is all dressed up with colors, lights and people. Here are a few links that may be useful:

www.citycaucus.com
This site is updated daily and lists dozens of free things to do in and near Vancouver.

A Flickr account has been created for Olympic related photos. I’ll be looking there for your pictures!

I just had to include this. It’s an amazing video; click now!

Keep shooting,

Dennis Ducklow

Update: Gateway of Hope
As a reminder, there is a committee of members who are actively working with Langley’s new homeless shelter to provide members’ photographs to decorate their walls. We would really like you to submit photos that convey a message of hope or inspiration. Send the images the same as you would for evaluation night to comps@langleycameraclub.com by the end of February.

Fraser Valley Invitational
It’s coming! May 8, 2010. Just over two months away! Tickets go on sale soon. Next month, our theme for evaluation night is Water: In Any Form, the same them as for the FVI. So get busy thinking about how you can represent water and make those photos. Last year, our club was tied for second place at the FVI. We haven’t won it since 2004. So, let’s go, club and “own the podium” this year!

We also need to select the theme for the 2011 FVI soon. Please send your theme ideas to Suzan (FVI coordinator) at sguest@shaw.ca.

Club Field Trip to Merritt Pays Off For LCC Member
Front_Cover_Pent_2010 copy.jpg The InfoTel Yellow Pages found Paul Sharpe's image "October's First Frost II" on his Flicker website. They contacted him for free usage of the image as a cover for the Penticton edition in exchange for free advertising. This type of practice is getting all too common in the world of photography making it very hard for professional photographers to make a living in the trade because most amateurs jump on the chance just to get their images published. Paul is very much against this type of use so told them he only does paid work. InfoTel then came back to him and paid 4 figures for usage of the photograph for 1 year, up to 500,000 copies.  Paul's website www.wizardofwonders.com calculates image usage so take a look to see how much your images could be worth.

Remember that if you upload your photos to the web, to watermark them. We cannot make it to easy for photo thieves to use our photographs for free without our consent can we?

Four Nations Competition
by Allen Bargen, CAPA President
Canada is again teaming up with the Photographic society of South Africa, the Australian Photographic Society and The Photographic society of New Zealand in the 2010 4 Nations digital competition. This is a friendly country to country competition where we get to showcase the best images from our photographers to the other societies, and vice versa. Only one entry per person will be selected for the competition, however you may send more than one image for consideration.  Allen Bargen will act as CAPA Chair for this event. Last year, we came in fourth, and we want to win this year! All members of current CAPA Clubs are welcome to enter.

Please think about submitting your best images – (this is an open competition so any subject will do) - and prepare them for entry in this competition as per the instructions in the attached document.

All images must be re-sized to a maximum of 1024 px on the horizontal axis and 768 px on the vertical axis. All images must be saved as jpegs and the file name should be as follows 001 ‐ PSSA ‐ John Smith ‐ Kalahari Lion.

For CAPA images, please use this naming convention,
001 – CAPA – Your Name – Image Name.jpg

The deadline for getting images to PSSA is June 30th. We need time to do the selections and get images ready for the competition. Please get your image(s) in for consideration as soon as possible, but no later than May 1st.. You may enter as often as you wish. Everyone who enters will be advised if their image is selected for the competition. Photographers retain all © ownership of their images.

Also please note that all Canadian entries must come to me, president@capacanada.ca so they can be entered in the pool for consideration.

Judging practice

A few of us meet once per month to practice forming judgments that can be used on evaluation nights. We use photos downloaded from the internet so on one is offended by the comments. It’s a worthwhile evening if you would like to brush up on your ability to comment on a photo and are interested in being a judge for the club. Our next meeting is Thursday, February 25, 7:30 pm at Dennis Ducklow’s. Please RSVP (dennis_d@shaw.ca)  if you are planning to come.

Inspiration

work.4191007.4.calp,294x416,2,TmF0dXJlIGlzIE15IEtpbmdkb20=.jpgTen years ago, Patrick DiFruscia’s employer asked him to take some product photos, in order to save on the expense of a professional photographer. After reading everything he could get his hands on, Patrick soon realized that photography was an art form that would enable him to express his inner feelings about the world around him. Now, he is well established as a professional landscape photographer. Take a look at his website and see for yourself. www.difrusciaphotography.com/
