LCC This Month
December 2009
Hi Everyone,
Merry Christmas to all our photographic friends! This comes with best wishes for a rich time with family and loved ones.
This is a great month for photography with cool, clear weather for winter shots, lots of Christmas lights and many opportunities for family photos. And, your Christmas stocking may bring your photo goodies!

1. December Calendar (all meetings at 7:30 pm)
Wednesday, December 9 – Evaluation Night
Our theme this month is Three of a Kind. As always, you have until the Monday night prior to evaluation night, to submit your images.
Instructions for uploading your images are on the club website at http://www.langleycameraclub.com/submissionInstructions.html
Special Note for Print & Slide Makers:
You must send an email to eval@langleycameraclub.com and follow the instructions at http://www.langleycameraclub.com/submissionInstructions.html
Remember, prints & slides MUST ARRIVE BY 7:15 PM on Wednesday night to be accepted. We really don’t want to reject your photo but will have to if it’s late!
Also, a jpeg of your image would be appreciated. This way, we wouldn’t have to photograph your image on evaluation night. Please send these along with your email noted above.
Thanks for your cooperation.
Wednesday, December 16 – Christmas Party
The Christmas party begins at 7:30 at the Hall. Members and guests are asked to bring some party food to share, BYOB, and a gift (approximate value = $10). We’ll have a gift exchange game and some special fun. Last year’s party was cancelled due to snow so we’re looking forward to this one! See you there!
The club will only have these two meetings in December.

2. Club Info
Gateway of Hope - Update
Last month, you read about a plan to use our members’ photos in the Gateway of Hope Homeless Shelter, which is now open in Langley, next to Kwantlen University.
The shelter offers a home and retraining for many people who are in desperate need of help.
Marlene and Dennis toured the facility during their recent open house and spoke with the person in charge. He asked us to connect with him again in two weeks. One reason for our trip was to get an idea of what size and type of images they might require.
One idea that we thought would go over well is an image with a message of hope on it. A few examples:
So, think about your pictures, consider adding some text and be ready with ideas when we get further direction from the Salvation Army (operators of the shelter).

4. Inspiration
Congratulations to Arnold Richardson. He won first place for color prints at the Abbotsford seminar in October!
And thank you to Kathy Neudorf who came across a forum site that made a statement that only painters could connect with nature !!! So, Kathy set them straight!
I am a formally trained painter who now makes photographs. During my schooling, my 14 years as a painter, and my transition into photography, I frequently encountered the view that photography is not art, and by association, photographers are not artists. Some think we just point, and shoot, and the camera does it all. Not so. When out with my camera, the hours melt into minutes. I frequently spend extended periods at a single location, taking picture after picture, moving this way and that, experimenting with setting after setting. This is a whole body experience - sometimes I'm perched on a tree limb, other times I'm on my belly. Do I feel connected to my subject? Absolutely. Do I slip from the present into the subconscious, intuitive state that brings forth true creativity? Without question. Not surprisingly, I felt this way about painting too. Is my photography art? I believe so. It's certainly every bit as satisfying as brushes and paint.

Finally, thanks again to Chris Harris who really showed us what the photographer’s life is all about last month. If you are not on his newsletter list, give yourself and early Christmas gift and sign up for his free newsletter at www.chrisharris.com. His last newsletter came out just after his visit with us. The following water reflection is from that newsletter and comes with a story.
