LCC This Month
November 2009
Hi Everyone
Welcome to November and another busy month at the camera club. Remember to keep busy with your camera in spite of the shorter and gloomier days – some of your best opportunities await you!
1. Calendar (all meetings at 7:30 pm)
Wednesday, November 11 – Evaluation Night

In honor of Remembrance Day, we will spend a few moments at the beginning of our meeting to pay tribute to the many Canadians that have sacrificed for us.
Our theme this month is Emotions. You have until Monday night, November 9, to submit your images.
Please keep the following in mind as you submit your images.
- If you would like to be flagged as a beginner in photography, so the judges can comment appropriately for you (we recommend you do this), add a ‘B’ as noted below. (Please use a ‘B’ instead of 1 or 2, which we used previously.)
To indicate your experience with photography:
$theme$MyDog$JaneDoe$B$ Add a ‘B’ at the end, followed by a $.
To indicate if you don’t want the judge’s comment (please be sure to do this if you will not be present)
:
$Theme$My Dog$ Jane Doe$N$ Simply add N at the end, followed by a $.
- To make it easier to title your images for submission, go to www.langleycameraclub.com/submissionInstructions.html and input your information. The correct title will be created for you to use for your images. Just copy and paste before you submit your images.
Special Note for Print & Slide Makers:
You must send an email to eval@langleycameraclub.com and follow the above format if you are submitting prints or slides. We have had a lot of prints/slides submitted without the proper notation and this requires a great deal of time for our tech team to correct. Complete instructions are here: http://www.langleycameraclub.com/submissionInstructions.html
Remember, prints & slides MUST ARRIVE BY 7:15 PM on Wednesday night to be accepted. We really don’t want to reject your photo but will have to!
Also, a jpeg of your image would be appreciated. This way, we wouldn’t have to photograph your image on evaluation night. Please send these along with your email noted above.
Thanks for your cooperation.
Wednesday, November 18 – Members’ Showcase
Members’ Showcase has two main events:
1. Show and Learn. Led by our librarian Brian Martin, we look each month at a compositional element and then discuss members’ photos within the context of that element.
2. Your time to share. We welcome slideshows, images, or whatever you have that shows us what you’ve been up to. Please send images to Paul Lengyell at plengyell@yahoo.ca . This week will include a presentation by Don Marcotte on astrophotography. Paul will send out more details closer to the date.
Wednesday, November 25 – Program Night
I am very pleased to welcome Chris Harris to our club this month. Chris visited us two years ago for the release of his latest book, the Spirit of the Grass. He is working on a new book on the volcanic history of our province. He’s probably the only person ever who has completed 120 circuits of the Bowron Lakes. He’s enjoyed this beautiful place as a guide, photography instructor and for personal reflection. He has two books on the lakes and will share some of evocative images with us. If you want inspiration for your landscape photography, don’t miss Chris’ presentation. Find out more at www.chrisharris.com
2. Club Info
Recognizing Judy
As you are all aware, Judy Daniels, who was honored in September as one of our Ten Year Members, is facing a major challenge to her health. As a tribute to her years as a contributor to the club and to recognize her incredible photographic talent, the executive has decided to implement, with her permission, a Judy Daniels Award of Excellence. This means that on any month when we have Evaluation Night, if a member scores 27.5 or greater, they will receive a Judy Daniels Award of Excellence ribbon. This ribbon is a very high honor and reflects the amazing photography of our member and friend.
Discounts for Members
Thanks to London Drugs for organizing a presentation in September with reps from Epson and Wacom. You may not be aware that , in addition to a discount on photo printing, members, also receive 10% off Epson inks, 15% off all photo papers and 10% of ColorMunki and Pantone Color calibration tools.
Fraser Valley Invitational – You Are Needed!
It’s not too early to think about the FVI, which will be on Saturday, May 8, 2010. Our theme is Water ~ In Any Form.
Of course many hands are needed make this event go smoothly and ensure a big success! We need you not only to take some great photos for that night, but we also to help with set-up, food, PR, gathering prizes, collecting the images, judging and clean-up. There's lots of jobs that need to be tackled between now and May. If you have the time and interest please send Suzan Guest an email at sguest.shaw.ca. We're just building the work team now and would love to hear from you.
The first planning meeting is Wednesday, December 2 at 7:00 pm at the Community Hall.
Delta Print Challenge – Last Call
Your last chance to submit a print for the Delta challenge is this week, November 11.
Images Not on Theme
Occasionally on evaluation night, images are submitted that are clearly not part of the theme. The club encourages a wide interpretation of each theme but judges do expect to be able to see some connection between the image and the theme. The judges have been advised that, when images do not show a connection, points should be deducted.
Gateway of Hope
If you live in Langley, you will be aware that the Gateway of Hope Homeless Shelter is soon to be opened. This new facility, located near Kwantlen College, will offer a home and retraining for many people who are in desperate need of help.
Thanks to the idea and homework by Marlene Ensing, we are in touch with them about providing photographs to decorate their walls. As soon as construction is completed, a group of us will tour the facility and prepare a proposal for the prints that will be donated. We will be asking members to submit digital versions of prints in the near future and selection of these will be made for printing. We have secured donations to help with matting and framing, so the only cost to the members will be their print.
Please watch for further announcements about this worthwhile community project.
3. Coming Events
December is coming, and that means the LCC Christmas party! Here is the club’s schedule for December:
December 2 FVI planning meeting, 7:00 pm
December 2 Basic Photography with Brian Martin, 7:30 pm
December 9 Evaluation Night. Theme: Three of a Kind
December 16 Christmas Party! 7:30 pm

4. Inspiration
What could be more inspiring than a few pictures by Judy Daniels? These are on the theme of “shooting in lousy weather”. Great inspiration. Turn the page.
