LCC This Month
October 2009

Hi Everyone

Fall is here – a favorite time of year for photography. Just got back from a family Thanksgiving weekend in Tulameen, so this is a little late. What a wonderful place our province is for fall colors. There are many photo opportunities this month – please read on.

1. Calendar (all meetings at 7:30 pm)

Wednesday, October 14 – Evaluation Night
Our theme this month is Churches. You have until Monday night, October 12, to submit your images.

We have made two minor changes in the way you submit your images.

First, if you would like to be flagged as a beginner in photography, so the judges can comment appropriately for you, please add a ‘B’ as noted below. (Please use a ‘B’ instead of 1 or 2, which we used previously.)

To indicate your experience with photography:
$theme$My Dog$Jane Doe$B$                     Add a ‘B’ at the end, followed by a $.

To indicate if you don’t want the judge’s comment:
$Theme$My Dog$ Jane Doe$N$                   Simply add N at the end, followed by a $.

Text Box: Special Note for Print & Slide Makers: You must send an email to eval@langleycameraclub.com and follow the above format if you are submitting prints or slides. We have had a lot of prints/slides submitted without the proper notation and this requires a great deal of time for our tech team to correct. Complete instructions are here: http://www.langleycameraclub.com/submissionInstructions.html Remember, prints & slides MUST ARRIVE BY 7:15 PM on Wednesday night to be accepted. Also, a jpeg of your image would be appreciated. This way, we wouldn’t have to photographer your image on evaluation night. Please send these along with your email noted above. Thanks for your cooperation.
The second change made is a device on our website to help you create the title for your images. Simply go to www.langleycameraclub.com/submissionInstructions.html and input your information. The correct title will be created for you to use for your images. Just copy and paste before you submit your images.
Wednesday, October 21 – Members’ Showcase

Members’ Showcase has two main events:
1. Show and Learn. Led by our librarian Brian Martin, we look each month at a compositional element and then discuss members’ photos within the context of that element. This week, we will learn about Compositional Unity
2. Your time to share. We welcome slideshows, images, or whatever you have that shows us what you’ve been up to.  Please send images to Paul Lengyell at plengyell@yahoo.ca .

Wednesday, October 28 – Program Night
Please be sure to join us this night for a program presented by Hazel Breitzkreutz. Hazel is an artist and a photographer and she will speak to us about the compositional elements that artists use that we, as photographers, can learn to implement into our photos.  Hazel is a member of the Crescent Beach photography club.

2. Club Info

A Free Web Gallery for You!
Last month I encouraged all of you to take advantage of this oppourtunity to share your work with us. I just checked and I haven’t noticed anyone new on the list. Come on, members, get your stuff in! All you need to do is write a short profile and send it, along with your images (600 x 400 pixels at 72 dpi), to webmaster Jim Horn at jim@jdhorn.com . Do it now! I’ll be checking on you!

Memberships Due
Just a reminder that, if you have not yet paid your membership dues, they were due on September 30. You must be a paid up member to submit photos. Thanks for attending to this.

Willowbrook Mall Display
Thanks to Paul Baker and Kathy Neudorf who organized a display of our prints at Willowbrook Mall this past weekend. Also, thanks to the many members who donated time to be at the mall display and tell people about our club as well as the members who contributed prints for the display. It’s a team effort.

Chris Sheffield Awards Night – Thank You
A special thank you goes out to all members who attended our annual Chris Sheffield Awards Night in September.  It was a special evening of imagery, visiting with friends, celebrating our founding members and those who have contributed a great deal for ten years or more. Special thanks to our awesome Executive who provided the food for the evening and extra special thanks to Rianna who coordinated the many, many prizes.

3.  Coming Events

  • The Abbotsford Photo Arts Club is once again hosting their annual seminar on Oct 17 or 18, 2009. This is a valuable educational event and highly encouraged. You can attend one or both days. Information and registration is available online at www.apac.bc.ca/seminar.html .

Get your prints and projected images ready as there are lots of regional competitions coming.

4.  Inspiration

Our guest presenter in November is Chris Harris,  a well known landscape photographer from BC’s Chilcotin region. Chris visited us two years ago on the occasion of the release of his latest book, Spirit in the Grass. He is now working on a photographic story of BC’s volcanic past and will share some of his photos from that project.  Members are encouraged to go to his website and subscribe to his free newsletter www.chrisharris.com/newsletter/index.html. The newsletter describes some of his stories behind the photos and is instructional as well as inspiring.
I have recently been reading a new book by a Vancouver photographer named David duChemin that I highly recommend. His book, Within the Frame, The Journey of Photographic Vision is a personal book full of real-world wisdom and beautifiul, inspiring images.  duChemin shows you both the how and why of finding, chasing and expressing your vision with a camera to your eye. Both instructional and inspirational, Within the Frame helps you on your photographic journey to make better images of the people, places and cultures you love, whether they are around the world or in your own hometown. The book covers everything from the basics of storytelling and the photo essay to how to direct the eye of the viewer through the deliberate use of photography’s visual language, to how to respectfully approach someone on the street for a portrait.

You can go to David’s blog at www.pixelatedimage.com/blog/ to take a look and download Ten, his list of top ten ways to improve your photography now.

Photographically yours,

Dennis Ducklow
