Wednesday, September 16 – Members’ Showcase
Members’ Showcase has two main events:
1. Show and Learn. Led by our librarian Brian Martin, we look each month at a compositional element and then discuss members’ photos within the context of that element. This week, we will learn about Balance Within Picture Space.
2. Your time to share. We welcome slideshows, images, or whatever you have that shows us what you’ve been up to.
Please send images to Paul Lengyell at plengyell@yahoo.ca .
Wednesday, September 23 – Chris Sheffield Awards Night
We celebrate the accomplishments of the 2008-09 year. Highlights of the evening include:
- A slide show of many of our images from the year
- Recognition of our members who have been with us for 10 years or more
- Acknowledgement of our Life Members
- Awards to many of our photographers from the year
- Awards to the Chris Sheffield Members of the Year
- Wine and food
- This is a formal affair! Dress up!
Don’t miss this night! New members are welcome!
Wednesday, September 30 – Program Night
We are pleased to host a presentation from London Drugs, one of our retail partners. They will be bringing in representatives from Hahnemuhle and Epson who will demo their products. Special pricing on these and other products will be offered to club members.
2. Club Info
Aldergrove Fair Pays Off
Members of our Club set up a sales booth for some of their images at the Aldergrove Fair in late July. They didn’t sell much but were delighted when the Langley Arts Council presented them with a cheque for $500, payable to our club. $100 of that will go to LAPS (Langley Animal Protection Society) with the balance going to the club. Way to go, Paul, Kathy, Joy and Tracey!
Executive Is Hard At It
Our first executive meeting of the year took place last Wednesday evening. We had two dozen people who gave their evening to share visions for the year, talk about current plans and volunteer in many ways to help our club succeed again this year. I am so thankful and impressed with the dedication and enthusiasm from this committed group. You can check out who is on the executive by going to our club website. Thank an exec member today!
Refreshments Continue!
Thank you to Ann Lengyell who has volunteered to coordinate our refreshments for meetings during the year. This was an important vacancy in our executive that she has generously filled. There are a few people that have volunteered to help with food one evening per month but more are needed. If you would like to add your name to this, please email Ann at alengyell@yahoo.ca . Our tummies thank you!
We’re Featured!

Basic Photography Class
New to photography? Need a brush up on the basics? Confused about f-stops, ISO, exposures, apertures and more? Confused no more!
Brian Martin has offered to teach a photography course for any members of the club on the basics of photography. Brian is well qualified. He has taught Continuing Education courses in photography in Burnaby for many years and run a successful high end wedding photography business. The class will take place on the first Wednesday of each month, for three months, beginning October 7, in our usual club meeting hall. Non-members can also take the course at a cost of $60.
A course outline is attached to this email.
A Free Web Gallery for You!
Members are encouraged to take advantage of the club’s website and provide us with images to create your own gallery. All you need to do is write a short profile and send it, along with your images (600 x 400 pixels at 72 dpi), to webmaster Jim Horn at jim@jdhorn.com . Do it now!
Memberships Due
As we are starting a new year, all memberships are due by September 30. You must be a member to submit images. The new fees are: individual membership: $50 and family membership: $75. Please pay our membership coordinator, Susanne Brown, who can be found greeting members as arrive.
3. Coming Events
- Campbell Valley Days is September 19 & 20. We will have our own tent set up with a print display. Please have your prints ready for Paul Baker & Kathy Neudorf. Volunteers will be needed to be at the display, greet visitors and tell them about the club.
- The club will also host a print display at Willowbrook Mall on October 10 & 11. Once again, prints for display and volunteers to be at the display are needed. Volunteer with either of these by contacting Paul or Kathy.
- The Abbotsford Photo Arts Club is once again hosting their annual seminar on Oct 17 or 18, 2009. This is a valuable educational event and highly encouraged. You can attend one or both days. Information and registration is available online at www.apac.bc.ca/seminar.html .
- Get your prints and projected images ready as there are lots of regional competitions coming.
4. Inspiration
The world said goodbye to an old friend this summer, Kodachrome. While many of us may not miss film, we can’t ignore the enormous contribution this film had on generations of photography. For a tip of the hat to an icon, click below for a short slide show of some classic images, including the one at right.
