May 2009 Update

Here is your monthly list of things happening at the Langley Camera Club.

Fraser Valley Invitational 2009 – Another Success!

What a great night we had at the Chief Sepass theatre on May 9! The whole event lived up to its billing: inspiring pictures, great food, awesome prizes, friendly people. Our new venue was a big success and we almost filled it.

Congratulations to our hard working and dedicated FVI team:

Lionel Adams, Paul Baker, Rick Church, Russ Desaulniers, Dennis Ducklow, Marlene Ensing, Zoltan Erdesz, Jim Horn, Bill Kellett, Detlef Klahm, Kirsti, Kathy Neudorf, Viv Newman, Winona Reisma, Kassandra Sproson, Mary Wood.

Our team will be meeting one more time to review the event. If you would like to offer feedback, please send it to any of the members above.

1. Calendar (all meetings at 7:30 pm)

Wednesday, May 13 – Evaluation Night

Our theme this month is A Man and a Woman. You have until Monday night, May 11 to submit your images. Please remember to indicate if you are level 1 or 2. Also, please let us know if you do not want or need the judges to comment. You do this as follows:

To indicate your experience with photography:

$theme$My Dog$Jane Doe$1$                      Add a 1 or 2 at the end, followed by a $.

To indicate if you don’t want the judge’s comment:

$Theme$My Dog$ Jane Doe$N$                   Simply add N at the end, followed by a $.

Special Note for Print & Slide Makers:

You must send an email to eval@langleycameraclub.com and follow the above format if you are submitting prints or slides. We have had a lot of prints/slides submitted without the proper notation and this requires a great deal of time for our tech team to correct.  Complete instructions are here: http://www.langleycameraclub.com/submissionInstructions.html

Remember, prints & slides must arrive by 7:15 pm on Wednesday night to be accepted.

Thanks for your cooperation.

Wednesday, May 20 – Members’ Showcase

  • This is your night for extended conversations about any image. If you wonder about one of your pictures, or someone else’s, send them to plengyell@yahoo.ca by May 18. We need you to take advantage of this opportunity – send your images to Paul!
  • If you have a slide show, Whatsit, or something else to share with the club, please let Paul know as soon as possible.

Wednesday, May 27 – Program Night

Our guest presenter this month is Sharon Wright, who specializes in photographing children. A mother of three sons, Sharon gave up her career in drafting to devote herself to photographing children. She specializes in working with children in natural settings, often at the beach, with a minimum of equipment.  Check her website at http://www.wrightphotography.bc.ca

Photo Hunt & BBQ

Mark you calendar for Saturday, June 13. This will be our annual photo hunt followed by a barbecue. This is a fun day to hang out with other club members and then enjoy a relaxed dinner together. Thanks to our planning team of  Russ Desaulnier, Brian Martin, Bill Kellett and Andy Kroontje. The BBQ will be at the home of Joy Gerow.

2. Thanks for your images

We have been harassing you a lot lately to submit your images – and you have responded! Thank you! Here are some results:

  • At the Crescent Beach B&W Print Challenge on May 7, we came in second!
  • At our own FVI, we came in tied for second!
  • And congratulations to Marlene Ensing who won first prize for the most popular print on display and to Rianna Stackhouse who won second & third place!
  • More competition results to come.

3. Club Info

Want to be an Executive Member?

The executive of the Langley Camera Club is re-elected (well, really, the word is acclaimed) every year in June. We strive to be an open club where everyone can be involved as much as you wish. We are always pleased to welcome newer members to join the leadership.  If you are interested in a position on the executive for next year, please speak to Dennis or any of the executive members (http://www.langleycameraclub.com/executive.html) for more information.

Email Security

When sending messages to the club, please do it in a way that hides the addresses you are sending to. This is to protect our list of email addresses and to prevent virus transmission. The easiest way to do this is to send the message to yourself and then in the bcc (blind carbon copy) field, put in the names of the club members.

4. Coming Events

Epson Print Academy – May 23rd at the Vancouver Convention Centre

This is a high profile opportunity for photographers to learn about print making.

Coffee and Cameras

Member Irene Theriau has suggested we try what they do at the Nanaimo camera club, which is to meet for coffee every Monday morning, 9 a.m. at the White Spot. The idea would be to discuss outings, exchange ideas etc. learn, and learn some more from fellow photographers. Then some of us would go out and shoot.

It doesn’t have to be on Mondays or at the White Spot. But if you are interested in joining Irene to start something like this, give her a call.

5. Inspiration

This month I heard an interview with a photographer who has very poor vision.  In his words, “Turns out the truth is, when it comes to photography, how well you see has only a little to do with how well you ‘see’. For me, it's more about the other kind of "vision". It's about light, composition, form, simplicity. It's about capturing and conveying those elusive moments that tell little stories - or suggest an essence, a mood, a message or a mystery.”

Later in life, he developed Parkinson’s Disease, resulting in serious hand tremors. Too much liability for one photographer? Not Allen Babbitt. He created “Tremor Enhanced Photography”.

“Perhaps most importantly, photography has given me the opportunity to turn my so-called “disabilities” into something positive and empowering. Yet another new way of seeing. I hope my images will help you “see” the world in new ways - turning you on to what lives just beyond our daily ‘nearsightedness’.”

Check out his photos and story. Definitely inspirational!
