Wednesday, April 15 – Special Presentation
Breaking the Mould by Horst Siegler
A description of the evening by Horst follows:
“I have expanded and edited the presentation from the one I did at APAC. It now includes digitally projected images to illustrate the points I'm trying to make.
The presentation will consist of two halves. In the first half I will make a case that camera clubs on the whole produce photographs that are fairly homogeneous and do not value or reward originality. I will outline why this situation exists and how the nature of clubs and CAPA, and how the things they do, tend to contribute to this.
The second half of the presentation will suggest more than a dozen things you can do in your imagination, in your camera and in post production to overcome this. Most of these are practical suggestions, i.e., you can go from the meeting and incorporate them directly into your photography. Most of my suggestions will be accompanied by example images.”
Wednesday, April 22 – Members Showcase
Part of the evening will be a seminar by Steve Poschner on how to calibrate your computer monitor so there is consistency in color between your computer and what you see from the club’s projector as well as from printers.
Wednesday, March 29 – Program Night
Our guest this month is Graham Osborne, a professional landscape photographer who lives in White Rock. Graham visited us last year to discuss one of his recent books, Vancouver Wild and is back to share images from his latest book about Hawaii. After the break, he will talk to us about how photographers can get their images published. Graham has a long list of magazines and books where his work has been published as well as a long list of awards. He has been described as one of British Columbia’s and Canada’s best photographers by CBC and BCTV. This is an evening not to miss!

Thank You!
The Langley Camera Club hosted a CAPA national print competition that closed in March. The judging took place on Saturday, April 4. There was a tremendous amount of work involved in collecting all the images that arrived from coast to coast, preparing to view 123 images, recording the scores of the three external judges, repackaging all the print boxes, sending them back and summarizing and reporting all the results. Huge thanks goes to Joy Gerow, our interim print coordinator for her tireless efforts to make this happen. Thanks also to Steve Poschner and Colin Scotter, who worked with us all Friday night and all day Saturday to prepare and execute a very successful judging event. The results of the competition will be made public soon.
Welcome
We’ve had three new members join our club within the last month. Please welcome
Sandi Stephens, June Young and Doug Delipper. And congratulations to Doug, who is our 100th member of the year! I’m not a historian but I’m pretty sure this is a new milestone for the club – the first time we have had 100 members. Glad to have you join us!
Coming Soon
Mark you calendar for Saturday, June 13. This will be our annual photo hunt followed by a barbecue. This is a fun day to hang out with other club members and then enjoy a relaxed dinner together. Thanks to our planning team of Bill Kellett and Andy Kroontje. The BBQ will be at the home of Joy Gerow.
Inspiration
| Two things to inspire you this month. First, the Fawn Lilies are up (just barely)! The flowers are showing through and my guess is that Easter weekend will be the beginning of prime time to photograph them. For those of you who don’t know, fawn lilies are very rare and beautiful little flowers that grow in High Knoll Park on the Surrey/Langley border. To find them, drive along 50th Ave between 200 St and 192 St. Park in the High Knoll parking lot. Cross the road and take the steps up the hill. You are there. Don’t step on them! | ![]() |

Secondly, Chris Harris is a well-known landscape photographer who visited our club last year. He sends out a newsletter that you can subscribe to for free by going to chrisharris.com. This month, he describes how he took this photo, which is notable for the sky that is darker than the land. | |
Photographically yours,
Dennis
