He has completed several projects that celebrate nature, combining the art of photography with the science of natural history. His wonderful images help to promote and protect the animals they display. John has spent considerable time photographing polar bears as well as grizzlies and black bears and recently he returned from a wolf photography trip in Jasper and Banff. His website johnlowmanphotography.ca documents the wildlife living in and passing through the Conservation Area of Maplewood Flats.

John’s presentation will certainly both educate and inspire us.

Two Zero One Three

Ok. Now what? Have you taken your first picture of 2013? Have you set a goal of getting an image published in a magazine?
Have you decided that THIS is the year you will submit an image for evaluation at Competition Night?

The great thing about goals & resolutions is all it takes is one item to complete your list.

Still mulling things around? Here are a few ideas for you – LCC focused:

1) Come out to a club outing – Sunday Jan 13, 2013 5:45AM meetup with Steveston the destintation RAIN or SHINE.
2) Submit an image to the January Comp Night – theme “Food”
3) Get involved with the club ‘behind the scenes’ talk to Bill K or Marlene E – or any of the Exec. We are still needing
a few hands to get involved with the FVI – talk to Bill K or Glen McK
4) Show your pictures at membershow case – a digital slide show with music or just individual pictures you talk about.
3 minutes to 15 minutes – Share with us – we’d love to see them.
5) Do you have special photographic technique or a unique shooting style that you can show us or tell us about?
We would love to hear about it.
6) If taking pictures of flowers is your favorite subject – try photography for one month without taking pictures of flowers.
7) Only ever use a zoom lens? Put it away for 2 weeks and shoot with fixed focal length (prime lens) only.
8) Take your first picture of the year.
9) Take your next picture of the year.
10) Print your first picture of the year.

Welcome to Two Zero One Three, may it be the best 365 days you have this year!
Cheers
Bill

A GREAT VICTORY FOR CANADIAN PHOTOGRAPHERS

November 7, 2012

OTTAWA, November 7, 2012: At last, Canadian photographers own their copyright.

The Canadian Association of Professional Image Creators (CAPIC) would like to congratulate all Canadian photographers in Canada on this important date and pivotal achievement in the photographic industry. As of today, Canadian photographers now officially own the copyright to all of their work whether the photograph is commissioned or not, thanks to the new Copyright law.

The principle of protecting photographers’ ownership rights started 65 years ago by Henri Cartier-Bresson, who founded Magnum with Robert Capa and David Seymour. Magnum assured that a photographer’s image belonged to the photographer and not to the commissioner of the work.

In Canada, all other artists have already owned the copyrights to their work and thanks to this new law, Canadian photographers, albeit the last in the industrialized world, now have all legal rights to their images.

CAPIC has been working towards this monumental achievement in Canada for more than 20 years through lobbying efforts and could not have achieved this truly important mission without the support of its members, who have contributed financially, morally and offered countless volunteer hours towards this major effort led by CAPIC National Copyright Chair, Andre Cornellier.

The Professional Photographers of Canada (PPOC) were a valuable partner in this achievement as well as the lobbying firm Temple Scott Associates for their work in Ottawa.

”I would like to thank the team that worked so patiently and for so long,” commented Cornellier. ”Finally we have won a right due to us as artists. Thank you to Canadian photographers across the country for your support and patience and to André Amyot and Brian Boyle of PPOC for your work. It has been worth it.”

CAPIC will be providing more information on the direct effects of the law for Canadian photographers in the week to come as we celebrate this important Canadian achievement.

Nov 28, 2012 – Chris Harris

Wednesday Nov 28 7pm, 9167 Glover Road, Ft Langley – The yellow heritage hall
LCC Presents Chris Harris – this is a public, no charge event. Come one, come all.

Chris’ latest book “Flyover” is co-authored with Sage Birchwater.
Flyover is a snapshot, a glimpse, a legacy, of a unique time and place, defined by the people who live it.
The inspiration to create a book photographed from the air and, telling the stories of the pilots… For Chris, his beloved and familiar Cariboo Chilcotin Plateau came to life to reveal a form of beauty that he had never imagined possible. As with astronauts seeing the planet from space, perspective wrought its magic and a new visual world captured his artistic passion.
These are the images he is most excited to bring to an audience; a beauty undiscovered and never photographed before, and seen only by this handful of privileged pilots.
